Text Box: Summer brings HOT weather, and the preferred beverage of many is beer. Although beer is consumed year-round, consumption peaks during the summer with the warmer temperatures. And why not? Nothing hits the spot like an ice-cold beer.

Consumers have never had as wide an assortment of “specialty” beers as they do now. The number of American “specialty” brewers-microbrewers, brewpubs and regional craft brewers is well over 1000. Today’s beer drinkers have shown a voracious appetite for both the quality and infinite range of beer styles and flavors produced by American “specialty” brewers.

What is a “microbrew” beer? In the beer industry a microbrewery is defined as one that produces less than 15,000 barrels per year. Most well-known microbreweries no longer fit this definition– for example, Samuel Adams produced over one million barrels last year. Today, most people in the brewing industry prefer to refer to these “microbrew” beers as “specialty” or “craft” beers.

Why the increased interest in “specialty” beers? Consumers are discovering the infinite range of beer styles and

flavors produced by “specialty” brewers. Beer drinkers have never had a wider array of products to choose from. What originally started as reproductions of Old World styles has become uniquely American. Just as what premium coffee and ice cream did for their industries, “specialty” beers have given consumers a greater appreciation for beer.

Confused on where to begin your beer tasting journey this summer? Why not attend THE STILL’S “ALL- AMERICAN” Beer Sale and Tasting and sample several different “specialty” beers. This month’s FREE tasting will feature beer instead of wine and is being held in conjunction with our “ALL- AMERICAN” Beer Sale. The tasting will focus on seasonal summer beers, including Anchor, Sierra Nevada and Breckenridge. It will be held at THE STILL from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th.

Remember, when the temperature rises outdoors, a visit to THE STILL’S “specialty” beer department is just the ticket!
